IRWIN JOHN 'CHESTER' BECKER
September 15, 1943 • August 21, 2021
Irvin John Becker, 77, of Saskatoon, passed away on August 21, 2021 of natural causes.
Irvin was born in Eatonia, Saskatchewan on September 15, 1943. He was the eldest son of John and Gertie Becker. Irvin grew up on the family farm north of Eatonia. In September 1949 he enrolled in Root School, a small rural one room schoolhouse Northwest of Eatonia. The following year he moved to the Eatonia School and also spent one year of high school at Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute in Outlook, Saskatchewan.
Irvin spent a few years working for the Coop, in the lumber yard and driving fuel truck. He began driving school bus in 1971, eventually taking on his own route. He enjoyed his time driving and at Christmas the kids on his bus were treated with his homemade chocolates. Irvin also loved to curl. He spent hours at the rink volunteering or serving on the local board.
On April 12, 1969, he married Patricia Menin of Madison, Saskatchewan. They spent many years on the family farm before moving to Saskatoon in 2017. Together they had 3 children, 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Irvin was predeceased by his parents and his son Chris. He is survived by his wife, children Stacy and Blaine (Christa) his 3 grandchildren, Leanne (Dennis), Lyndon (Telysia) and Taylor (Abigail) and one great-grandchild Elodie, brother Ron (Janice), sisters Kathy (Neil), Carol (Marshall), sister-in-law Linda (Jim), brother-in-law Kevin (Quinselle) and many nieces and nephews.

VERONICA ANN (SEEFRIED) LONGMUIR
It is with sad hearts that the family of Veronica Longmuir announce her passing on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the age of 70 years.
Grant Wayne Specht, aged 69, of Eatonia, SK, passed away peacefully on August 5th, 2020, after a long struggle with lung cancer. Grant passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. Grant was born in 1951 in Eatonia, SK, to his father Jacob Specht and his mother Emelia (Martin) Specht. He graduated from Eatonia School and later attended the University of Saskatchewan where he studied anthropology.
Grant lived in Calgary, AB, for several years where he worked as a car salesman. While he would soon return to Eatonia to work on the family farm, his time as a salesman would initiate a life-long love of haggling the price down to the last cent. Whether he was up against a local car salesman, a gritty hail adjuster, or a RCMP member during a traffic stop, Grant never backed down from a challenge. Grant was a grain farmer for over 45 years and was most at peace when surrounded by wide open prairie skies.
He was extremely passionate about his family, farming, his Church, and his community. Grant will be fondly remembered for his quirky sense of humour, and his absolute dedication to his four children; Jacqui (Mike), Ria (Justin), Lexa (Terry) and Tom (Brooke). Grant was never happier than when he had all of his children together, so that he could entertain them with ridiculous stories and goofy jokes. Grant is survived by his loving, supportive spouse Betty Hamre, his four children, his three grandchildren Everett, Sebastian and Jameson, his sisters Diana Deyenberg and Dorraine Hansen, and his many nieces and nephews.
Due to Covid-19, a Celebration of Life will be held by invitation only, on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Grant’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society at www.cancer.ca/en/donate Arrangements in care of Ashley Knash – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
CARL HENRY MILLER
November 8, 1917 • September 22, 2019
Carl Miller was born in Eatonia on November 8th, 1917. The 1921 Canadian census shows him to be 4 years of age living in the Kindersley district, which would be the farm south of Eatonia.
In the 1920s, the family returned to Melville and the farm was left in the care of his uncle, John Miller. When his uncle was no longer able to work the land, the Miller family returned from Melville in 1929. They were shocked to see how much the house had deteriorated in their absence. Now Carl and his sister Lena and brother Willy (Bill) had a much longer walk to school. (Cornfeld)
Carl has experienced much sadness in his life. He was very close to his mother. Apparently, he was pampered as a young child because “he was sickly.” Carl lost her at age 25 when she died in 1942. Around this time, Carl was left to work the land when his brother Bill left to serve in the army during the second World War. His father died in 1957.
His nephews Jim and Walter Hoffman were especially close to him as he lived nearby and saw them frequently during their “growing up” years. He was deeply saddened when Jim passed away so suddenly in December, 1981. Then tragedy struck for him when his brother Bill passed away so unexpectedly only 3 months later in March, 1982. This was such a difficult time for him, as the two brothers had lived together for most of their lives. Walter passed away in 2012.
After Carl sold his house, he lived in Corcoran Place until he was 99 years of age. He moved to Oasis Living in June, 2017. Carl passed away peacefully at the age of 101 surrounded by friends and caring staff. He was predeceased by his parents, Karl and Barbara Miller, sisters Elizabeth Wolfe, Mathilde (Hoffman) Manz, Carolina Miller, brother Bill Miller, and three siblings in infancy: Rudolph, Mary, and Edward. He was also predeceased by several nieces and nephews, including two dear nephews who were very close to him, Jim and Walter Hoffman. He is survived by his nieces, Mildred Ginter, Mildred Olafson (Myron), and Linda Alberts (Dennis), as well as by many dear friends in Eatonia.
He was well known as he enjoyed his daily walk downtown for coffee and a visit, and in his later years he was the world’s biggest fan of Won Ton soup.
Interment will take place in the Eatonia Cemetery.

SHIRLEY SYLVIA YOUNG
July 5, 1938 • August 16, 2017
The passing of Shirley occurred on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 after a very short but difficult battle with cancer. Shirley was born in Medicine Hat on July 5, 1938 to Christian and Catherine Beck. They moved to Mantario in 1951 where her dad ran the Empress Lumber Yard. Shortly thereafter she met Heinz Young at a Luther League and they were married in 1957, moving to their current farm. They were blessed with four daughters between the years of 1958-1963. Shirley and Heinz would have celebrated their "60th" anniversary in November of this year.
Shirley enjoyed the farm life of raising and caring for the farm animals, ducks, geese, chickens and turkeys, along with gardening and canning for her garden, in addition to making meals and helping in the field; not to mention the raising of four daughters! Needless to say, she was a busy lady.
Shirley loved to go dancing. She and Heinz attended many dances at the Laporte Community Hall. One of her other passions was her love of country and gospel music and playing the organ. She began as organist for the Lutheran Church in the mid 60’s, and continued up until very recently. She also planned and played for the church services at Eatonia Oasis Living every month. Shirley always had her faith, which is reflected by her commitment to playing at the church for these past 50 years. She and Heinz enjoyed their summers spent at their cabin in Greig Lake and Lac Pelletier; stacking wood, cooking freshly caught fish and preparing for her family and friends. Shirley shared many happy times with her grandchildren teaching them some of life's many lessons. She always enjoyed hearing their stories and always keen to know what adventures they were up to.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband Heinz and their four daughters: Janice (Pat), Brenda (Duane), Sharon (Norm), Debbie and her grandchildren: Lane, Jeremy Heit, Clinton (Anita) Matthew (Rianne) Hoffman, Claudia Markus Scheu. She will be sadly missed by all family and friends. These words came from a friend: "The promise given to her of a new life, one that is youthful, perfect, pain-free has now been fulfilled. She is blessed in her faith and love."
Shirley's funeral was held on August 23rd in our church, and was very well attended by friends and family.

JOY ASSMUS
June 27, 1934 • March 14, 2017
Joy Assmus passed away peacefully on Mar 14, 2017 at the age of 82. She was born in Maidstone, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1934, to George and Inez Shreenan. She grew up on the family farm being the middle child of 5.
Her grade one to eight school years were spent at a one-room country school. Joy was keen on an education so she went to Battleford Collegiate which was a boarding school in North Battleford for grades nine to twelve. With her sight set on teaching, she attended the Saskatoon Normal School in 1952-53. Joy first taught grades one to nine in Dufferin School, south of Cutknife, for four years and then transferred to the Cutknife town school for a year. She made lifetime friends with whom she enjoyed keeping contact.
She moved to Eatonia for a teaching position in 1958. She met Kelly Assmus and they were married on July 22, 1961. Joy and Kelly had two sons, Rob and Bayne. Camping and travelling across North America became a summer tradition for the four of them. One of Kelly and Joy’s favorite past times in retirement was going to auction sales and collecting antiques.
Joy taught grade one for most of her twenty-seven years in Eaton School. In 1964 Joy became vice-principal, a position she held for twenty-one years. She helped coach high school drama and taught Choral Singing and Speaking for music festivals. After retiring in 1985, she continued to help at the school with Choral Speaking and Individual Speaking. Joy also took an active role in KBSTF (the teachers’ provincial organization), and KBSTS (the retired teachers organization).
Joy became a member and a supporter of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church when she married Kelly. She taught Sunday School, participated in the monthly church services at the Care Home, and contributed to teas and bake sales, fowl suppers, luncheons and Christmas Eve services.
Kelly was born in the town of Eatonia on May 12, 1933. He was the last child born to Fred and Berta Assmus and was the only one of the family to be born in a hospital. Kelly grew up in the Bailey School District and took his primary schooling there. Every winter, the family would relocate to B.C. where most of the family worked in the packing plants. He spent a full three years there with his sister Erna where he attended school. He finished up his schooling in Eatonia and LaPorte before deciding to take up full time farming with his father Fred.
Kelly was busy in those early years. He took up exterior painting and he was a very active member of the community. He was a member of the Board of Trade, the Fire Brigade, a Cub leader, a member of the town council, the church board, and the Lion's Club. He did everything from volunteering on the construction of the original hockey and curling rinks, coaching minor hockey, and even refereeing the provincial finals.
Camping and traveling across North America became a family tradition for the four of them. One of Kelly and Joy’s favorite pastimes was traveling across western Canada going to antique auctions sales. The last twenty years Kelly spent endless hours volunteering at the Eatonia Motel doing general upkeep and maintenance.
He was the youngest of six children and has been predeceased by his parents, Fred and Berta, and his siblings Hattie (Jack) Nunweiler, Gay (Lydia) Assmus, Erna (Bill) Bander, Erma (Bill) Elko and Walter (Betty Ann) Assmus. Dad is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joy, and his two sons: Rob (and wife Lynn), and their children Brooklyn and Carson; Bayne (and wife Deb) and his stepchildren Chris, Ashley, and Kaine; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Kelly starting suffering from mobility issues in his later years and for the last year of his life he stayed at the Eatonia Oasis Living Care home, where he enjoyed teasing the staff with a few jokes and always a smile.
